Five concrete steps to break an addiction
1. Decide when to stop. Choosing a significant date such as a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion may be beneficial.
2. Modify your surroundings. Your house and place of employment should be free of any reminders of your addiction.
3. Keep yourself busy. Create substitute activities, such taking a walk or calling a friend or family member to talk, rather than giving in to the impulse to use.
4. Examine your prior attempts to stop. Consider the things that did and did not work.
5. Establish a network of allies. Ask your family and friends for their support and encouragement.
