The Soul Knows No Bars: The Loss and Creation of Meaning in Prison

Drawing on philosophy classes I taught in a maximum-security setting, I will examine the life-world of the prisoner. With over two million inmates serving time in the United States, this exploration is of great sociological concern. The phenomenological issues raised are equally important. What happens to the experience of space and time when a human being is confined for decades in cells the size of a normal bathroom? What sort of relationship results with one's own embodiment, and that of others? Revealed is the human capacity to construct a meaningful world even in the most constrained of circumstances.

We will see how inmates are not simply the victims of their dehumanized environment. They also are active agents using strategies of resistance, reclamation, and escape to revitalize hope and meaning.

I will draw upon inmate discussions recorded in my book, The Soul Knows No Bars. Of this, Sister Helen Prejean (author of Dead Man Walking) writes, "Put a philosophy professor into a locked room with incarcerated thieves, drug dealers, and murderers, throw in Socrates, Nietzsche, Cornel West and Heidegger*and what do you get? Conversations that knock your socks off. A book you simply can't put down."

Educational Objectives:
1) Gain an understanding of the way in which imprisonment transforms and distorts multiple features of the experienced life-world.
2) Gain an understanding of the way in which inmates respond in creative and life-enhancing ways to the constricted life-world of the prison.
