The U.S. has called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to “unanimously” support a U.S.-Mexico proposal for the deployment of “non-U.N.” force to Haiti.

As the meeting was being held, Haitians gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in the capital Port-au-Prince to protest the proposed invasion. Activists from the grassroots social movement MOLEGHAF held placards reading “long live socialism” and “long live the resistance of the masses”. One protester came to the streets on horseback dressed as Haitian Revolution leader Jean Jacque Dessalines who led the 19th-century battle that defeated France and won Haiti’s independence, others came draped in Russian flags.
