Gibraltar, Top Ten Most Dangerous Airport in Europe, BA490 Landing

Gibraltar ranks at one of the Top ten most dangerous airport in Europe, due to some extreme factors at the airport.

Firstly, an international roadway runs on top of the runway having to be closed each time a plane lands or departs. Both ends of the short runway are surrounded by water. As you you can see in this video the planes have to make a decently sharp turn on decent in order to line up with the runway, and avoid restricted Spanish airspace to the north, and the monumental Rock of Gibraltar to the South.

All of these factors combined rank Gibraltar as one of the Top ten most dangerous airport in Europe. Check out the other videos on ministry of flight to see other extreme landings at Gibraltar Airport.

In this video I am out on a boat on a dolphin safari with my friend @Graham "the Baron" Hesketh. Check out his content and give him a follow! The boat is a bit uneasy with the waves, which is to be expected, but it was amazing for this A320 to come soaring right overhead. Watching the sharp turn it makes to come in for landing at the Gibraltar Airport. The airport lacks an ILS system, so pilots must make a visual landing.

Thanks so much for watching.

Get closer to the Tarmac than any other airport at Gibraltar International Airport, you can walk across it! I don't know of any other major international airport in the world where you can do this! Up close 4K plane spotting at one of the most DANGEROUS and EXTREME airports int he world! Subscribe for more!

I love how these planes land on a tarmac that is surrounded on all sides by water. This is a must watch to see how close to the water these planes land and take off. There are very few airports in the world like this, that could support commercial airline jets to land and take off under such extreme conditions.

Gibraltar is one of the most dangerous airports in the world because the runway is short, it is surrounded by water on both ends of the tarmac, an international highway bisects the tarmac with cars, bikes and people on foot crossing. The weather caused by the Strait of Gibraltar can lead to brutal crosswinds. The pilots who land here have to be very qualified. Flights to Gibraltar are currently only from the United Kingdom because Gibraltar International Airport is technically a military airport not a civilian one.
