The Stanley Hotel - Staying in Haunted Room 1302 and Night Tour | Inspiration for The Shining

The Stanley Hotel is one of the most famous hotels in the United States. Located in Estes Park, Colorado, this historic and prestigious hotel is surrounded by snowcapped mountains located just outside Rocky Mountain National Park. It is here in 1974, that young horror writer Stephen King spent a night snowed in during the winter season, the empty and desolate hotel inspired him to pen his famous horror novel The Shining.

The Stanley Hotel is also known to host several ghosts and many say it is one of the most haunted hotels in America. There are several rooms between the main hotel (built in 1909) and the neighboring Lodge (built in 1910) that are said to be more active than others when it comes to paranormal activity. Well, always curious about the paranormal, I have booked "Spirited" Room 1302 - where shadow figures and a ghost dog have been encountered.

This year was a rare occurrence - The main Stanley Hotel was in the process of being renovated so rooms were not available for overnight stay, hence I booked the most haunted Room (1302) in the neighboring Lodge Hotel - which is located just feet away from the main hotel. However, I was granted access to explore the halls of the main hotel while it was being renovated so was a truly unique experience.
