In March of this year, the Clear Creek County commissioners voted to rename Mount Evans – to honor the indigenous people of Colorado. It was sent to the state naming board which has began discussing alternate names, for the mountain. One of those names – Mount Blue Sky – is painted on a new mural in Rino, which honors and remembers more than 200 Arapaho and Cheyenne tribal members who were killed in the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864. The attack was authorized by the former territorial Governor of Colorado, John Evans, the Sand Creek Massacre Foundation says. That’s who Mount Evans – the closest 14-er to Denver – is named after.
