Bear with Me

‘When working with bears, you can’t start loving them or treating them like friends.

Always keep a distance and remember it’s supposed to be wild,’ says Vasily, a staff member at Russia’s Orphan Bear Rescue Centre. The temptation to bond with a cub is unbearable, but bears must never lose their fear of humans. It’s vital for their future survival out of captivity.

The rescue centre was organized by Valentin Pazhetnov, who dedicated his entire life to saving orphaned bear cubs. Without their mothers, killed by hunters, the cubs have little chance of surviving. But here, in the orphanage, they have already saved and returned to the wilderness more than 250 animals. In June 2021, Valentin died at the age of 84 and his centre is now run by his children.

On Wildness Protection Workers’ Day in Russia find out more about the miraculous cases of saving bear cups in Bear with Me.
