Dr. Paul Kengor and his co-author Dr. Mary Nicholas have produced a tour-de-force analysis of the enigmatic former Communist, Bella Dodd (1904-69).  A thorough study of her writings and testimonies, along with in-depth interviews with people who knew Dodd, The Devil and Bella Dodd provides careful answers to important questions. Did Bella Dodd really place over 1,000 communist spies in Catholic seminaries?

Bella is the one who spoke of a mass infiltration of communist men into Catholic seminaries. She took part in that effort. Bella literally described her battle against the clutches of communism as a battle against the Devil himself. Hers was a “school of darkness,” as she called it, a school of “hate” deceptively dedicated to a “Soviet America,” for which she was a master organizer and infiltrator—of public schools, of public and private institutions generally, and perhaps even of her Church and seminaries.

But unlike Karl Marx, she mercifully broke away and came to Christ, particularly through the intervention of a then-priest named Fulton Sheen. She would become arguably the most courageous and public female ex-communist in the history of America, dedicating the remainder of her life to a special kind of penance, warning the world, through congressional testimony, FBI interviews, lectures, and writings, of the evil that is communism. Sheen brought her in and even appeared at her bedside to anoint her just before her death. It’s a very moving story of redemption.

Dr. Mary Nicholas is a retired M.D. from Maine, who has spent her life studying Dodd. For this book, she/we interviewed everyone we could, including people who knew Bella Dodd—such as Alice von Hildebrand, among others. It took years, but she got Dodd’s FBI file declassified via FOIA requests.

Dr. Paul Kengor is professor of political science at Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania, and a New York Times bestselling author of over a dozen books.
