Journalist Maryam Henein Reacts To The DocuSeries Shadowland

The new docu-series Shadowland, a co-production between NBC and The Atlantic, is divisive propaganda and a hatchet job at its finest. The aim of the six part docuseries was allegedly to “investigate conspiracy theories and explore the life-changing impact they're having on supporters and those caught in the crosshairs, to discover whether truth as we've known it can survive in the 21st century.”

“No,” is the answer if this documentary is any indication.

“None of the subjects were even invited to the premiere at The Atlantic Festival in D.C. As a former Hollywood producer, I can tell you that is a bit odd. They also told the media to keep our names out of any reviews,” says Investigative Journalist Maryam Henein, who appeared in the series and is best known for directing the award-winning film Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Elliot Page.

“This was a smear campaign,” adds Christoper Key of the Vaccine Police who was also featured in the series. “They left out a lot of footage to paint us as crazy.”

The Radical Media production crew, who told subjects that the series was about those who believe in a shadowy government, followed several individuals, including Google Whistleblower Zach Vorhies and Henein, for a period of roughly six months. Ironically, the Atlantic festival, where the series premiered, was “brought to you by Pfizer.” None of the Atlantic journalists or Joe Berlinger ever met or spoke to Henein.

Henein was shocked to discover the use of sexism and selective editing to diminish her incredible 26-plus career, which ironically began with working at MSNBC. Instead, they chose to portray her as an unhinged, whiny woman who is simply trying to gain fame as a female sidekick to her "international celebrity” boyfriend.

In an odd editorial choice, the producers decided to highlight the breakup between Vorhies and Henein, who have been together for the last two years. Perhaps hoping to cross genres into reality television, they featured the challenges the two faced in their relationship, and how it ended. For the audience, this devolution into relationship dynamics is out-of-character for a serious documentary and didn’t add to the piece.

They approached Maryam to supposedly cover her medical freedom activism and had her read from her book, George Floyd: A Multi-Layered Psyop Examined. They interviewed her about her company HoneyColony, and why it was targeted by the FDA’s Operation Quack Hack; they left it all on the cutting room floor.

It’s sad to see a so-called journalistic enterprise stoop so low with this hatchet piece. What’s even more degrading is their intentional use of misogyny to place Maryam in a subjugating and inferior role alongside the male character, who in this instance happens to be Zach Vorhies. Rather than focus on her 26 years of actual journalism, they state she is riding on a man’s coattails. Their focus on this romantic relationship detracts from the objectivity of the documentary and does not provide insights into so-called “conspiracy theories.”

Joe Berlinger should come clean about this documentary and acknowledge that it is not an analysis of conspiracy theories, but rather an intentional hit piece with shoddy journalism, devoid of ethics. This series, which plays more like a reality show, is an example of what not to do when filming and documenting the life of an actual hard-hitting journalist.
