"Ukrainian planes attacking Belgorod shot down in front of the airfield: details

On 13 October, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a missile attack on Belgorod. An hour before the shelling, Ukrainian Air Force MiG-29A and Su-27s with US AGM-88C/D missiles were scouting Russian borders. The fighters were supposed to target Pantsir, Buk, and S-300 air defense systems deployed in the Belgorod Region bordering Ukraine.

The AFU pilots used a low-altitude flight with a brief "jump" to an altitude of 3,500-5,000 meters to launch missiles. They used this technique before an attack on Kherson. This was the way Ukrainian aviation tried to check the location of Russian air defense both in Nova Kakhovka and on the line of battle.

The attempt to "break into" the Russian air defense system in Belgorod resulted in the loss of both planes for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The planes were shot down near the village of Shyshaki, in the airspace over the Poltava region. According to the Military Chronicle, two rockets exploded in the rear hemispheres of the planes when both pilots requested to land at the Mirgorod airbase.

According to the Military Chronicle, the Su-27 and Su-24MR of the Ukrainian Air Force were shot down from a distance of 217km. The A-50 reconnaissance and target designation aircraft could have been used for target designation at such a range for the air defense complexes. The 9M82MV missile of the S-300V4 complex could be used to shoot at the AFU fighters from such a distance. Its ultimate launch range is 350km and its flight speed is 7.5M (9187km/h)."
