Ukrainian boy dies in hospital after six-hour rescue in Mykolaiv

An 11-year-old boy who was pulled out alive after spending six hours trapped under rubble in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, on Thursday, October 13, died in a hospital that night, according to the governor the Mykolaiv Oblast, Vitaliy Kim. According to the city’s mayor, Oleksandr Sienkevych, two upper floors of a five-story building were completely destroyed by a Russian artillery strike and the rest of the building collapsed into rubble.

This footage of the the rescue was released by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES) before the boy’s death was reported. The SES, who in a Facebook post named the boy as Artem, said he “bravely held on” while trapped under the rubble, following the advice of rescuers trying to free him. After being pulled out, the boy was taken to a hospital for treatment, the SES said. A few hours later, Governor Kim reported that the boy died in the hospital after experiencing a cardiac arrest.
