Are You A Blackbelt? Do you NEED to be? (Episode 030)

I got my yellow belt in Chidokwan Karate ay back in 1993, a blue belt in Wing Chun Kung Fu in 2004, a yellow belt in Liu Seong Gung Fu (the Kuntao/Silat art of Willem Reeders) in 2006. After that I got green and gray sashes in Liu Seong in 2007 and 2008, a black belt in 2009, and an instructor rank (orange) in 2011. All told it took me about 7 years of training to get to instructor level, and now I have almost three decades in the martial arts. But what does it all mean? In this episode of The Martial Arts Podcast with Phil Elmore, I explore what rank means, if anything, and how you should (and shouldn't) approach the topic as a student of self-defense.
