“Roving The Mediterranean” is a black-and-white circa 1940 film that opens with a shakedown cruise of one of the United States Navy’s latest cruisers from the Atlantic Ocean into the Mediterranean Sea. The ship pulls into port at Gibraltar on Spain’s southern coast at mark 01:13 as sailors are shown visiting spots of local interest including climbing (rather unsuccessfully) the famed Rock of Gibraltar at mark 02:05. By mark 04:23 the crew is on to Tunis in North Africa to visit the ruins, and then to the beauty of Venice at mark 06:04 where gondolas are shown sailing up to the naval vessel in search of customers. The sailors gather at St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco) in the center of town at mark 07:16before boarding another gondola for a trip down a canal. “Words don’t begin to describe it so we’ll let the Venetian atmosphere speak for itself,” says the narrator at mark 07:55 as we see footage from along the waterway until the film reaches its conclusion.
