Hello all,
My name is David, and I'm your Traveling Tutor. In this video, Fely and I take a day trip to the "Paint Mines" area near the St. Croix River, in the Governor Knowles State Forest, north of Grantsburg, WI. What is a paint mine? We didn't know, so we headed out to discover that during the 1800s, D.A. Caneday found a pigment to mix with linseed oil, and it was mined for many years (Copper Paint Company) to make paint of various colors. The paint was so durable that it leads to the ultimate demise of the company's success! Much of the original structures still exist here, including the water wheel, the piping, and the dam which holds up the millpond.
