A variety of sounds are used by sound therapists in their treatments. These sounds can be generated by machines, recorded or synthesized. Common sounds used in sound therapy include white noise, birds chirping, and running water. White noise is a random mixture of all audible frequencies that does not produce a clear pattern. Bird songs are variations in pitch and tone produced by different species of birds. Running water has calming properties that relax the listener. Some sound therapists also use binaural beats, which are specific frequencies produced by a sound device that produce the desired effects on the listener's brain waves.
