Sacramento, California – On September 28, 2002 at 8:45 a.m., a man was shot and killed after advancing on a deputy with a machete outside a home in Sacramento County. About 8:40 a.m., deputies were called to a home in the 5400 block of Enrico Boulevard just north of Fruitridge Road for reports of a man, identified as 55-year-old Jaime Naranjo Bautista, who was having a mental health emergency. Bautista’s wife had called 911 saying that her husband was having a mental health emergency and had a machete in his hands. When a deputy arrived at the home, the wife was standing in the front yard and Bautista was on the front porch holding a machete. Body cam video shows Bautista then “advanced” towards his wife and the deputy. Sheriff’s officials said the deputy pushed the wife out of the path of Bautista and attempted to retreat while commanding him to drop the raised machete. Once the deputy was backed up to a fence and Bautista continued to advance and ignore commands, the deputy responded by shooting Bautista multiple times. Bautista was taken by ambulance to a hospital but died of his wounds.
