UN General Assembly: 11th emergency special session on Russia’s 'attempted illegal annexation' of parts of Ukraine

United States, New York

UN General Assembly holds its 11th emergency special session in New York on Monday, October 10, to discuss a draft resolution on Russia’s 'attempted illegal annexation of parts of Ukraine.

The resolution is sponsored by the United States and Albania.

On September 30, President Vladimir Putin agreed to sign documents allowing the accession of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as well as the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye, to the Russian Federation.

According to Moscow, it followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia. Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory
