The real purpose of paratroopers is to create dilemmas for your adversary. If 5,000 paratroopers can be inserted anyplace inside your country, you will have a much harder time planning a defense.

While some site the VDV or Russian Paratrooper attack on Hostomel airport as proof that the paratroopers are obsolete on a modern battlefield, the truth is that although the VDV was considered elite compared to the rest of the Russian ground forces, the VDV was poorly trained and underequipped for their mission.
