How to tell an AK-47 from an AK-74 (or AKM from AK-100)

A few notes to start. I'm not Brandon Herrera. I'm just trying to give the average viewer an idea of what to look for.

Also note: If you see an AK-47 it is most likely an AKM, which has a cheaper stamped steal receiver instead of the more expensive milled steel receiver.

The main difference between the two generations is the magazine and the muzzle break. The AK-47/AKM series has a very pronounced banana magazine. The AK-74/AK-100 has a straighter magazine and a muzzle break with hole cutouts in the side.

The AK-47/AKM fires 7.62x39mm ammunition. The AK-74/AK-100 fires 5.45x39mm ammunition. The two ammunition types are not compatible which may cause logistical problems with the Russian army.
