First robot to speak at House of Lords

This week, the British House of Lords will see a speaker who knows nothing about politics, speaks in a monotonous drone and probably would not meet classification as a living organism. Also, a robot is due to speak.

Ai-Da, a robotic ‘artist’ who adorns ‘realistic’ skin, will speak before a House of Lords Communications and Digital committee, where she will give a talk on how the rise of AI and robots like her are a threat to human creativity. And, presumably, what a computer is. The creator of Ai-Da, Aidan Meller (who claims he didn’t name the robot after himself), hopes that Ai-Da can ‘challenge what it means to be an artist in a post-human world,’ and that her speech to the Lords ‘will help us understand how an AI robot sees the world and what that means for the future of creativity.’ Perhaps he can ask for Ai-Da’s help in putting fewer buzzwords in his sentences.
