This black and white newsreel, Yesterdays Newsreel Russia 1912 to 1917,
was released by CTVE, Classic TV Explosion, as a series on the news of
the first half of the 20th century. It was produced by Ziv-TV, a
short-lived company that created early television content.
Intro (0:09-0:34). It opens showing a biplane, a lady in flapper dress, military guns, cars, horse racing (0:37-0:54). First segment shows Russia (1912-1917) (0:56-1:03). The Imperial Russian Army is shown parading along the street (1:04-1:26). Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna and their entourage parade down the street (1:27-1:37). Newspaper clippings of the day’s news (1:38:1:45). Views of Archduke Ferdinand’s funeral (1:46-1:51). Nicholas II and his army (1:52-2:06). Various scenes of military personnel and military marchers (2:07-2:40). The Russian people rebelled against the Tsar in 1918. Scenes shown of riot (2:41-3:19). Cossacks refused to raise arms against the Revolutionists and troops mutinied (3:20-3:45). Scenes with Aleksandr Kerensky who served as head of the provisional government (3:46-3:55). Bolshevism replaced the Provisional government, the Romanoff or Romanov government was dead (4:16-4:26).
Second segment is 1930 Mt Vesuvius Erupts (4:27:4:32). Mt Vesuvius
erupted July 1930. Scenes of the eruption and devastation (4:33-5:30).
Herculaneum, Pompeii’s sister city, also buried by a Mt. Vesuvius
eruption, excavation is shown. Scenes of excavated Herculaneum buildings
(5:31-5:54). Third segment: 1931 Personalities (5:55-6:01). Fanny Brice, comedy queen, born Fania Borach, October 29, 1891. She discusses her career in Burlesque and Ziegfeld follies (6:02-6:31). They show the father of radio, Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian Physicist, and his wife, Beatrice O’Brien, in 1927 (6:32-6:46). Images of The Tamadge Sisters, Norma and Constance, silent movie stars (6:47-7:01).Fourth segment:1937 The Golden Gate Bridge (7:02-7:10).
Views of Golden Gate Bridge, a suspension bridge, completed in 1937,
that spans between San Francisco, California and the San Francisco
Peninsula. Construction of the bridge illustrated (7:11-8:32). Fifth segment: 1928 Fashions of the Day (8:33-8:38). Scenes from the House of Worth, run by French designer, Charles Fredrick Worth, founded 1858. Styles of the day modeled (8:39-9:19). Men’s fashion of the 1920’s are shown (9:20-9:52). Sixth segment: 1928 Aviation (9:53-10:01).
Shows Frank Hawks, a pilot for United States Army Air Service during
WWI, attempting to use a glider to span the country. He did it in the
Texaco Eaglet in 1930 (10:02-10:56). Seventh segment: 1920 Sports (19:56-11:02).
Amateur golfers, Charles E. “Chick” Evans, and Francis DeSales Ouimet
(father of amateur golf in U.S.) playing golf match. Close-ups of both
men (11:03-11:30). Speed skating started in 1924 with skaters like Earl Johnson whose steel blades flew across the ice (11:31-12:05). Scenes from the 1918 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs with winner of the derby, Exterminator, and Jockey Willie Knapp (12:06-12:38).
