This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features nine segments of historic highlights. Wings of Commerce (:28). In 1919, John Alcock and Arthur Brown make the first non-stop transatlantic flight in a modified WW1 Vickers Vimy bomber. Others follow suit (:29-1:10). Children crowd around and watch a barnstorming exhibit (1:11-1:40). In Paris, open-cockpit passengers are flown to London in a De Havilland DH9B (1:41-2:12). In 1921, passengers board larger, enclosed planes, which then are able to carry baggage (2:13-2:40). On May 2, 1923, Lieutenants John MacReady and Oakley Kelly complete the first non-stop transcontinental flight across the U.S. (2:41-2:58). In 1927, Charles Lindbergh is shown with his Spirit of Saint Louis. (2:59-3:10). A group of boys holds model airplanes (3:11-3:24). Clarence Chamberlin, backed by Charles Levine, flies non-stop from New York to Berlin in a Bellanca monoplane (3:25-3:45). A Dornier Do X was a flying boat (3:46-4:26). 1937, the Pan American Airways Sikorsky S42 Clippers make flights to China. Shown aboard are people dining at tables and using a makeup vanity (4:27-4:55). An American Airlines and a Canadian airliner use jet power (4:56-5:26). Mrs. Atlas? 1929 (5:42). In Austria, a woman lies on the ground and various cars run over her (5:43-6:12). Lie Detector Frees Man 1922 (5:42). A man who spent 12 years in jail is freed after passing one of the first lie detector tests (5:43-6:45). Personalities (6:47). 1921, Teddy Roosevelt’s grandson rides a horse (7:52-7:14). 1920, actress Grace La Rue and Hale Hamilton are shown (7:15-7:35). 1946, financiers Thomas Lamont and Martin Egan return from Japan (7:36-7:53). Fireworks Explode (7:56). April 3, 1930, The Pennsylvania Fireworks Display Company factory explodes, killing and wounding people, and destroying houses and vehicles (7:57-8:57). Free Gas 1924 (9:00). At Turner Valley Alberta Canada, a man fills his container from a pool of refined gasoline and pours it into his gas tank using a funnel (9:02-9:34). The Big Bell 1930 (9:36). The 20-ton low C bell is hoisted into place at Riverside Memorial Church on Manhattan Island (9:38-10:25). Fashions of the Day 1936 (10:27). A group of women use vibrating belts, sit on a rolling machine, and using a wiggling machine at a fat reducing salon (10:29-11:06). Sports 1935 (11:08). Outboards race on July 14, 1935 at the Buffalo Launch Club Regatta (11:11-12:09).
