Those who went to the tomb where Jesus lay saw "the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself." (John 20:7). From that time many have tried to guess what that meant.
Why would Jesus do that? Why would Jesus take the time after His resurrection before He left the tomb, to meticulously fold the napkin. Then set it aside by itself?
Many say it was to show that His body was not robbed from the grave. For what robber would take the time to fold a face napkin? Others say, "to show He was in no hurry." Some say that it has to do with a Jewish custom. When the master of a house sat at his table to eat. If he had to get up from the table for some reason, would take the napkin and fold it and lay it on the table. Which would mean he would return to the table.
However, there is nothing about this alleged Jewish custom of the folded napkins. It is nothing but a rumor. The truth is that table napkins, such as we use today, were not used in Jesus’ day. Jews would do an after-meal hand washing as part of the eating ritual. That was a European custom.
Washing of the hands before a meal was mandatory according to rabbinic injunction, but after washing their hands, did people dry them with a cloth? Apparently, there is no early rabbinic source that discusses how the hands were dried after washing them.
Besides, all of this has only to do with eating at a table, and not death. I saw today in two verses in the old and new testaments that say the "heavens and the earth will wax old like a garment." The Old Testament says, they shall be changed. The New Testament says, "like a vesture they shall be folded up."
Listen as I show the strong possibility that the folded napkin was not about any of the above conjectures, but a very real sign that curse of death was folded up, passed away and abolished.
Soon one day, the words of 2 Peter 3:13 will be realized. "But we according to His promise do look for a new heaven and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness."
"And they shall see His face and His name shall be in His forehead."
