The mother of an Iranian teenager who died amid the protests that followed the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini has accused authorities of killing her, and rejected official claims she died by suicide.

Nasreen Shakarami told Radio Farda, the Iranian branch of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, that her 16-year-old daughter Nika was killed at a demonstration in September. RFE reports that a forensic medical certificate said the cause of death was “multiple blows with a hard object” to her head.

According to news reports, Nika’s aunt and uncle appeared in a TV broadcast appearing to confirm the cause of death as suicide. Nasreen Shakarami told Radio Farda the two had been coerced into making this statement
