Man rescues mom from floodwater... while stopping to take selfies
A man in Florida has been hailed as a (photogenic) hero after reportedly swimming through flooded streets to rescue his wheelchair-bound mother from her submerged house.
49-year-old Johnny Lauder made the half-mile trip after Hurricane Ian sent a deluge of floodwater into his mother Karen’s home. Karen, a double amputee, had initially refused to move to safety and was now unable to leave the house, so her son did what any son would do in that situation.
Bizarrely, however, he also stopped to film himself performing his heroics, as well as taking numerous selfies before actually getting down to the business of removing Karen from the bacteria-riddled water.
The pictures were published on a GoFundMe page to help raise money towards repairs.
