Home built for Royal Governor William Berkeley on a site about 3 miles inland. The area was known for its ever-flowing spring. After hanging Nathaniel Bacon's gange members, he hurried off to England, where he died a year later. To learn who assumed of the plantation, see William Ludwell Lee.
