The incredible longevity of the Eastern Roman Empire of more than 1000 years was almost exclusively due the excellent strategic location of its capital city, Constantinople. But not only was the strategic location perfect, being surrounded to three quarters by water, but the city had been equipped with the most formidable defensive system the world had ever seen, namely the Theodosian land walls. But as if those two things weren't enough, a giant sea chain was added, that could block enemy vessels from entering the Bosphorus straight, while allowing own vessels to supply the city with goods. And to top it off, an inventor from Heliopolis, brought the invention of greek fire to Constantinople in 672. These 4 things in combination, strategic location, Theodosian land walls, Sea chain and Greek fire, allowed Constantinople to withstand an incredible amount of sieges. In total, the city was besieged 15 times unsuccessfully from 378 AD onwards, until only as late as 1204 AD, was the city finally sacked by the crusaders, which was the real disaster for Constantinople. The city was recaptured for the Eastern Roman Empire and besieged an additional four times unsuccessfully until it finally fell in 1453.
