Martin Luther was a German monk, theologian, priest, author, hymn writer, and professor born in 1483 and ordained into the priesthood in 1507. In 1517 Luther proposed his Ninety-five thesis as a means of opening up a discussion with the Catholic church regarding indulgences and other church practices he believed were contrary to Scripture. While His intent behind the thesis was to encourage discussion within the church, the result was the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Contrary to the Catholic church's teachings, Luther taught that salvation and the resulting eternal life is a gift of God's grace offered to anyone who repented from their sins and put their faith in Jesus as the Messiah. His theology was in contrast to the Papacy, teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge. Beyond teaching justification by faith alone, Luther is known for translating the Bible into a German variant that made Scripture accessible to everyday Germans, writing many hymns, and authoring several Christian works. His teachings were the basis for the beginning of the Lutheran church. Martin Luther was incredibly influential in forming much of what we know as Christianity today by insisting that the Bible, not the church, is the authority upon which our beliefs should be based.
