Rejuvenating an Old Dairy Field

Peter is using the brush hog to cut down the thistles to give the grass a chance to grow on the 12- acre property we are leasing. We are restoring the marginal land by cutting out the dead matter and managing grazing animals to increase fertility.
There is some great grass underneath all the thistles, by cutting down the overgrowth, we are giving it a chance to flourish. We predict that next year will be excellent grazing on this new lease.
Peter has one section of the fence installed and has a tip for wiring the fence that makes it easier for future adjustments. Because the ground has been compacted by heavy dairy cows for years, it took dozens of smacks to get each fence post in.
We end the day back at The Burkel Farm where our flock is peacefully eating on another beautiful fall evening. We have a June calf that is getting stout off of her mother’s milk and grazing. These ewes are getting good and fat. What a good night to enjoy a beer and a fire.
