Garlic, the stinking rose. This close relative of the onion has been consumed and used in medicines by humans for eons. As a people we have introduced garlic in our everyday meals and in folk medicine, it is believed to help with arthritis, chronic cough, as an antibiotic, deterrent for parasites, and to treat snake and insect bites, as stated by Wikipedia. As pet owners, we ask the question, are there benefits of garlic for dogs? This is a controversial debate amongst dog lovers and researchers the world over.
On the report of the Merck Veterinarian Manual, species of the Allium genus, garlic and other members, such as, onions, shallots, and leeks, contains thiosulfate that can cause oxidation in the red blood cells resulting in anemia. To whereas, many pet owners have praised the benefits of garlic for dogs in their overall health.

Is Garlic Toxic for Dogs?
One research study states their experiment was “To determine whether dogs given garlic extract developed hemolytic anemia and to establish the hematologic characteristics induced experimentally by intragastrical administration of garlic extract.”
