NYC to Buy Back Used Needles From Drug Addicts (October 3, 2022)

The New York City Council is considering a pilot program that buy would back used needles from drug addicts. Introduction 60 is sponsored by East Harlem Councilwoman Diana Ayala. If approved, it would pay 20 cents a needle - with a cap of $10 per person, per day. Only active drug users can participate. They also must go to one of the city's two overdose prevention centers, use the sterile needle provided, and dispose of it at the site. After a one year trial, the health department would then make a recommendation to continue to stop the program.

This action is on trend for the state of New York. Last year, Governor Kathy Hochul decriminalized the sale and possession of hypodermic needles and syringes. Police were also told to not arrest anyone who possessed, sold, or shared needles.
