AMAZING GAMES YOU NEED TO PLAY THIS HALLOWEEN - Top Picks For Spooktacular Fun
In this episode, we share our picks for amazing games you need to play this Halloween to have some spooktacular fun!
Halloween and video games just seem to go together. There are so many games that play into the season that it almost has its very own genre. It doesn't have to be straight-up horror, slasher, murder-type games, But there are a number of games that definitely fit this type of year better than others. While I'm not a huge fan of Halloween myself, these are some of my favorite games to play at this time of year.
Honorable mention: Super Mario World
I mean there's never a bad time to play Super Mario World, right? But what gets Super Mario World an entry on this list is all of the ghost houses that Mario has to go and explore. There's so scary that Yoshi won't even go into them! Whether you are trying to avoid Boo, or just find another hidden exit to complete all the stars, Super Mario World is a great game to play this time of year.
Splatterhouse - TurboGrafx 16:
One of the best games on the TurboGrafx 16, Splatterhouse has climbed in price in recent years. You play a titular character Rick, who happens to have a certain resemblance to Jason Voorhees with a purple hockey mask on. In Japan, the game features more religious symbols which were downplayed in the west, and Rick's mask is White vs Purple we got. You punch, kick, and smash your way as you navigate through a side-scrolling beat'em up destroying and killing everything in your path. This is also available on the TurboGrax 16 Mini.
Ghost 'n Goblins - NES, Genesis, Super NES, Nintendo Switch:
If there's one series that defines Nintendo hard, Ghosts 'n Goblins has to be toward the top of anyone's list. You fight through demons, zombies, and devils themselves, as Arthur, brave knight in search of his girlfriend Prin-Prin. The NES game is so difficult you have to defeat all the levels not once, but twice! It is unapologetically challenging, and you swear that it came from Hell's depths to torture you as you die over, and over, and over again.
Holy Diver - NES, Famicom:
Holy Diver is indeed inspired by Dio, and until 2018 was only available on the Nintendo Famicom. Unreleased originally in North America, Holy Diver is set in the year 666 and sends you through multiple, challenging levels. The game is so hard that when Retro-bit re-released it they gave you a cheat right on the top of the game, press Start, plus A & B to make things just a little bit easier. Featuring terrific music, challenging levels, and brilliant enemies, this is a game worth importing or trying to find one of the Retro-bit re-releases if you can.
Castlevania - NES, SNES, Nintendo Switch
The Castlevania Series has been a staple since the original NES and has been released on just about every platform since. While the first three are absolute classics, for me my favorite is Super Castlevania 4 on the SNES. To me, it has the best combination of gameplay, weapons, graphics, and music of any game in the series. That's not to say that the first three aren't bangers, well Simon's quest really isn't but you get what I'm saying. You could not have Metroidvania without the Castlevania side of things, and Castlevania 1 through 4 are tremendous titles to play this time of year. Plus, you can also get the Castlevania collection on a variety of different systems to be able to enjoy other classics, including the Game Boy games and Kid Dracula!.
Luigi's Mansion - GameCube:
Luigi's Mansion is Nintendo's way of doing horror. It's cute, but it's trying to kill you! The launch title for the Nintendo GameCube, Luigi's Mansion features Mario's little brother going on his first solo adventure, with the help of professor E-Gad and the Poltergust 2000. One of the things I didn't realize until years later is that Luigi is always humming the theme to the game, again just one of those things that makes it hauntingly cute. Its subsequent sequels on the DS and Nintendo Switch carry on the tradition of excellence and are definite must-plays.
Resident Evil 4 - PS2, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Switch
While this has been released and re-released on multiple platforms, my favorite way to play Russian Evil 4 is with the Nintendo Wii and the Wiimotes. It provides you with a perfect level of control that I don't know that any other game on the Wii ever matched. RE4 is scary, mind-bender, and challenging, but in the end, it is tremendous fun. Even for someone like me who is not a fan of slasher and gory-type games, I keep coming back to this one year after year due to it being so exceptional.
