My Modified Kent Torpedo 20" Twin Motor e-Bike Review

After being on a mini bike, pocket bike, pit bike, motorized bike binge, I decided that I also needed something a bit quieter that I could ride stealthy without any heat from LEO's or unhappy neighbors when I did my drone stuff or RC projects. I opted for a cheap eBike. I mean .... really cheap!

I saw a few online reviews of the 20" Kent Torpedo which is a kids bike. One of the video reviews was from a guy who was my height and weight. I knew it's limitations but I bought it. It's pretty impressive on it's own having only a tiny 180 watt 24 volt rear wheel motor with pedal assist only but it did great on a 10 mile ride at El Dorado park. I was in Level 3 assist and had a little batttery left and as I recall, about 15 to 16 miles an hour most of the way.

Originally, I had an Amazon purchased AW Electric 750 watt 36 volt conversion on it but it requires a more stout, expensive battery like a 20 Ah, or get about 6 1/2 miles out of the 10 Ah battery I had that powered it OK. I have some used 36v battery packs and they would shut down not long after I got going. I'm pretty sure that it was the BMS in those batteries.

Replacing the front wheel kit with a much smaller 250 watt 36 volt setup actually cost me a little more and I lost about 2 miles per hour on top speed. I have plenty of used Li ion battery packs from 10 Ah to 20 Ah's to choose from which should give me plenty of range with this little setup. You could run the main battery until it quit and then power up the original 24 volt rear motor on the back wheel and pedal assist home another 10 miles or so. Pretty cool! This video is my taking it for a little run to my folks house from my place in Buena Park to La Palma and back home again. Next time, we will add some drone support for aerial shots. ~ William Flying39
