First unveiled in late 2013, the Iran Aviation Industries Organization ‘Fotros’ drone will be delivered to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Ground Force in the near future providing the corps with an augmentation to it’s power projection capabilities. Division commander Colonel Akbar Karimloo stated that the following an evaluation of the new drone’s features and extensive meetings with the ministry of defence, the corps had decided to accept it for frontline service. The drone is capable of engaging in reconnaissance and combat operations, with an operational range of up to 2,000 km and an endurance time of up to 30 hours. It can be armed with precision guided air to surface missiles and anti tank missiles, and has a 7.6km flight ceiling.

While Iran’s defence sector overall is far from outstanding, with its most advanced fighter program based on reverse engineering of American pre-Vietnam War era designs and its ballistic missile and submarine programs overwhelmingly based on licence produced North Korean technologies, its drone program has stood out as a field where it is in many respects a world leader. The program gained a major boost in 2011 when an American RQ-170 stealth drone, one the most sophisticated in the world, was commandeered and forced to land over the country and subsequently reverse engineered to develop an indigenous line of stealth drones for both surveillance and combat. The Fotros appears to resemble American designs such was the Predator with a similar bulbous nose to house avionics. While it lacks the stealth capabilities of other Iranian designs, the Fotros is expected to be cheaper to operate and may be able to deploy more firepower on long range missions.
