Gustav Klimt’s Mada Primavesi.
Painted in 1912, Gustav Klimt’s Mada Primavesi brings out a balance between hopes and strength. As Mada Primavesi’s (Eugenia Primavesi) pose suggests, Mr. Klimt shows us that this girl will be one strong person. Already showing signs of a person ready to put everything on her shoulders, Mada Primavesi stern look at the world fits quite brilliantly with Klimt. For being a 9 year old at the time, it is quite amazing to me to see a model exactly expressing what was necessary in this piece. One usually sees a model being subversive to the needs of a painter, but here you can tell that both the painter and model have a certain bond that is trying to make a statement.
How great it is to see balance in any form of creativity. While making a statement by putting her in the middle of this masterpiece, Gustav Klimt finds a way to also beautifully depict a sort of uplifting representation of those around her. As if Mr. Klimt is showing us what kind of person Mada will be, and how she will enhance this world for the better by the beauty surrounding her. How interesting it must have been to try to figure out this peculiar balance for Klimt. Getting the unique, modern perspective of a model, while also finding the beauty not in her but the background, is truly innovative.
Breaking Away From His Golden Period.
After breaking away from his Golden period, Gustav Klimt studied Oriental art. Even though there is detail in this composition, Mada Primavesi shows us that less is a lot of the times more. By not filling in the painting, Gustav Klimt has made us look at her facial expression, body stance, and the colorful background. To depict this intertwined mix of dissonant ideas into a seven-foot painting is quite remarkable. You would think a painter needs to fill every idea inside a piece to show how smart they are. Not this genius. Being able to “lessen” a piece of work for the audience to slowly understand their meaning is what makes a person smart.
Mada Primavesi, later in life, described Gustav Klimt as an “awfully kind” man, who was extremely patient with her. Painted six years before his death, Mr. Klimt was able to see something in this bright little girl. As it turned out, his thoughts and hopes came true. Eugenia Primavesi founded a convalescent hospital for children in Canada. Read more about the beauty that Gustav Klimt brought to the world.
