LASD releases body cam video of deputy shooting at Rosemead auto shop
A man was hospitalized after being shot by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy in Rosemead on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 19, authorities said.
The shooting happened at 4:50 p.m. in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Boulevard, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies had responded to a call about 25-year-old man who drove into the parking lot of an automotive shop, acted erratically and threatened the business owner and employees if they didn’t fix his car, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The deputies found the man seated in his car with a woman and saw he had a gun in his lap, the Sheriff’s Department said. When deputies ordered him to put his hands up away from his lap, the man refused and deputies grabbed him from the car, authorities said.
A physical struggle ensued between one deputy and the man and the man reached for his waistband and a deputy fired a single round, striking the man, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
The man was transported to the hospital and was reported to be stable, authorities said. He was still hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 20, said Lt. Liu, watch commander with the Sheriff’s Department’s Temple Station.
A handgun was recovered from the scene, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Neither any deputies nor the woman passenger were injured during the incident, authorities said.
Further identifying information for the hospitalized suspect was not immediately available.
Homicide detectives were at the scene investigating the circumstances and the Sheriff’s Department asked the public to avoid the area of San Gabriel Boulevard between Graves Avenue and Rush Street.
Early Wednesday morning at the scene of the investigation, a suspected drunken driver struck a deputy’s patrol car at the intersection of San Gabriel Boulevard and Graves Avenue around 2 a.m., Liu said. Both the deputy and the suspected DUI driver were transported to the hospital.
The extent of the deputy’s injuries were not immediately clear, Liu said. The driver was taken into custody later on Wednesday.
