Faust Checho dives into the well known fact that Michelangelo stole bodies to study anatomy and improve his understanding of the human body for the sake of art.

Michelangelo famously studied corpses by dissecting them in secret at the Monastery of Santo Spirito in Florence as many of the dead bodies from hospital ended up there. Using his profound understanding of anatomy, Michelangelo his anatomical structures all along his artistic depictions of the Bible’s Book of Genesis when Pope Julius the Second requested the famous artist paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Since Michelangelo destroyed many of his anatomy sketches and notes in fear of getting labeled a grave robber for his anatomy experiments, so it took almost 500 years for us to discover the secret anatomy hidden in his greatest masterpiece.
