Homesteads Don’t Need a Tractor, Anyway

I’ve been cyber bullied in the comments section for not using my old Ford tractor as it was intended to be used but I think I’ve learned that my problems may not run quite as deep as I originally anticipated. More on that to come in a future video – in the meantime the kids and I spend time together getting some work done around the homestead.

Homesteads don’t NEED a tractor. You can farm without an ATV or a side-by-side, a pickup truck, or a nice trailer, too. But I tend to think of these things as a force multiplier; they allow you to get more work done in the finite amount of hours available each day. And since time is money the investment you have to make in whatever equipment you’re looking at will likely pay off in a short amount of time.

We’ve owned this old Ford tractor for two years now and I still haven’t spent the time needed to get it running where I can use it as a tractor. It fires up quick and runs like a champ, but with a non-functioning hydraulic lift there’s not much tractor work that this tractor can do. The other day, however, my father-in-law and I were hanging out and while we were piddling around shooting the breeze I figured out that my lift problems may be a simpler fix than I originally thought.

On a related, sad note, this will be the last video where our rooster, Mark, hangs out with us as he was attacked by a predator the day after this video was recorded. I talked a little about that in one of our community posts but we’re all a little heartbroken to lose one of our nicest, friendliest chickens. Our farm animals aren’t “pets” per se but we still care for them deeply and it hurts when they’re gone.
