In this story, a young boy goes to discover what happened to this poor desolate place where nothing good grows and no animals live except old crows. He meets the Onceler and pays him to hear the story of how this once beautiful place became the desert that it is. There follows the story of the onceler as he came to this place and discovered the Truffula trees. He begins to harvest these for his Thneeds, a sweater with connected up sleeves that he can sell for $3.98. He calls his whole family to come to move in and help and altogether they expand and enlarge the business without caring for any of the management of their resources. They chop down the trees without replanting. They wipe out the barbaloot population by destroying the truffula fruit yields. They destroy the air quality with their factory and choke out all the swamiswans so those have to leave. Then they gum up the pond with gobs of brown goo and the fish have to crawl out and leave. And then last of all, they run out of truffula trees because they didn't plant any as they went along. Once that’s done, they all leave except the old onceler. And that’s why the place looks so terrible.

This story is about mankind’s stewardship over the Earth and the natural resources we have here. It’s a fun rhyming story that I enjoyed when I was little. I hope you like it too!
