Almandin had been out of racing for 2 years before he resumed his racing career in Australia in June of 2016. Before his hiatus from racing in 2014, Almandin knocked off the subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist back home in Germany. In his favour Almandin had a successful Melbourne Cup owner in Lloyd Williams and trainer Robert Hickmott who had done it before. Also in his favour was his sire Monsun, who had already provided two Melbourne Cup winners.
