Suisun Marsh Salinity Control Gates Refurbishment Project
Since 1989, the Suisun Marsh Salinity Control Gates have helped make the Marsh fresher by limiting how much saltwater flows in, while still allowing fresh water to enter the Marsh. In August 2022, DWR reinstalled one refurbished gate and removed another. This is a massive endeavor since each gate weighs 95,000 pounds. As California continues to face extreme drought, raising and lowering the gates depending on salinity levels becomes even more important for fish, plants, and waterfowl to survive in the area.
