Dystopic Journal, Hillary and Reductio ad Hitlerum

Ep 8 Some of you may remember reading this piece from the Liberty Relearned blog a while back: So, you want to compare Trump and his followers to Hitler and the Nazis? That was mainly regarding a quote by Donny Deutsch (remember him?) comparing Trump supporters to Nazis because of his handling of the illegal immigrants. “If you vote for Trump, then you, the voter, you, not Donald Trump, are standing at the border, like Nazis.”

Sadly, such reductio ad Hitlerum arguments still persist, especially coming from the Left, and continue to be aimed at Trump and his supporters. This is an intellectually lazy argument. It often fails to establish any true parallel between either Trump’s policies, or the beliefs of the rank-and-file Trump supporter and those common to the violent and authoritarian fascist regimes of the 20th century. They are filled with misrepresentations of the former President’s words, and misconceptions about actual, historical fascism.

In a September 1st, 2022, speech in Philadelphia, President Biden declared MAGA Republicans a threat to Democracy. Biden later walked back his claim, saying he didn’t mean all Trump supporters. He conveniently failed to elaborate on just what constitutes “MAGA Republicans” as opposed to an ordinary Trump supporter. Later that same month, Hillary Clinton inferred in a talk in Austin, TX that Trump followers during his rally were giving some Nazi-esque salute saying: “We saw the rally in Ohio the other night, Trump is ranting and raving for more than an hour, and you have these rows of young men with their arms raised.” She apparently was referring to a part of Trump’s rally where some had their hands upraised with the index finger extended, commonly understood (except by her) to mean “We’re number one!” or in the context of the rally, “America first!”, Trump’s tagline.

These are the arguments that Hillary and the other Democrats are trying to make:

Trump regularly draws huge, enthusiastic crowds. “You know who else drew large crowds?” Hillary, or the media asks in your ear… “Hitler! Hitler drew big crowds too, and they also raised their hands in the air!” Trump talks of making America great again– that familiar voice returns… “You know who else wanted to make their country great again? The Nazis!” Then the voice would turn sweet and say, “but you love democracy, you’re not one of them, are you?”

Coincidentally, a North Dakota teen was murdered, run down by a man who thought the kid was part of a Republican extremist group. According to the Associated Press: “The driver, Shannon Brandt, told a 911 dispatcher that he struck Cayler Ellingson early Sunday in McHenry because the teenager was threatening him, and that the teen was part of a ‘Republican extremist group,’ according to a probable cause affidavit.” It would appear that Mr. Brandt thinks he knows just what to do with MAGA Republicans. They are, according to the President, enemies of democracy after all.

Persistent comparison of Trump’s followers to Nazis is not just unfair and unjustified, it can be downright dangerous. How many more Shannon Brandts are there out there, just waiting for a chance rid the world of MAGA Republicans? What, besides the demagoguery of Biden, fuels the hatred of Trump supporters? And notice, that the hate is being directed not just at Trump himself, but those who are outspoken in his support. The Democrats are trying to create an association in the public’s mind between support for Donald Trump and hatred for democracy.
