Tunisia entered the 21st century, if not the most prosperous country in the Arab world, then certainly the most respectable and close to European standards. Only 3.8% of Tunisians lived below the poverty line, the middle class was estimated at 60% of the population, although unemployment was 15%. About half a million Tunisians were working in Europe or in the oil Arab countries.

Tunisia's chief troublemaker was named Leila Trabelsi. According to Tunisian tradition, the "first lady" played a great role in the life of the country. Except that under Ben Ali, this role was not at all positive. Tunisia, which did not know much corruption under Bourguiba, was shocked.
