Story behind the song
This song was written as an acoustic sketch about the life of Maltbie Davenport Babcock (author of the hymn My Fathers World).
He was described as having "an unusually brilliant intellect and stirring oratorical powers that commanded admiration, [that] won for him a foremost place among the favorites of his denomination".
After Babcock's death a poem of his was published posthumously as the familiar hymn, This is My Father's World. At his funeral, the presiding clergyman eulogized him, "We do not need a candle to show a sunbeam...The work our brother has done — the life he lived speaks for him.
