Totally surprising!!!!!
When we moved to northern Florida, I needed a lawn mower. I didn't want the hassle of gas, nor did I need to deal with the safety issue related to storing gas over winter etc.

I did some research about the pros and cons of a lawn mower that didn't run on gas. I didn't want a corded mower so looked into battery operated. I was skeptical about battery operated as all mowers I have used in the past were gas powered. I researched many different manufacturers and decided that the Ryobi gave me the best value and performance for my budget.

I decided on the Ryobi 40v HP Brushless 20" push mower. This unit came with a 40v 6ah battery and charger. The battery charges in about 2 hours or less after being used to mow the entire yard. There is an indictor on the battery showing its level of charge while on the charger while it's charging. Once fully charged, both the charger and battery are dark. A button on the battery will illuminate the 4 charge indicator LEDs to show the current level of charge.

When I took it out of the box, I was surprised how light it is. Not too light, but far lighter than the traditional mowers and very easy to 'stand up' to clean and store. It's heavy enough but because it doesn't weigh like the gas mowers weigh it's far easier to maneuver. There is no struggle in turning or pushing even in taller grasses. The levers to lock and unlock the handle are easy to use making storage simple. The height lever is also simple to operate with little effort. Because of the way it is designed, a simple change of one lever adjusts all four wheels to set the mowing deck to the desired height and easy to lock in place.

I was also surprised that the battery lasted for the entire lawn. I have a lawn about 4000sqft grass area. With a fully charged battery, the entire lawn is easily mowed with 1/4 charge left on the battery indicator.

I was also surprised that mower has more power than I thought it might. This allows cutting small brush and vines around trees and other growth which pops up which is 'not grass'. With any mower it's important not to mow over stumps or anything which would stop the blade or otherwise is not grass. But accidents happen. During one mowing session I hit a stump or other obstacle and it stopped the motor. With my hand still on the safety lever I moved the mower away and the motor started right back up. That doesn't happen with gas mowers.

That brings me to the starting process. This is not only simple but very intuitive. Simply push the safety bar down and with your thumb, press and release the start button.

All in all, I would highly recommend this mower for typical suburban yards. For larger yards the mower has a place to 'store' a spare battery. Get the unit with two batteries or get a spare battery. Charge them both and store them in the mower. During a mowing session, when you exhaust the first battery, simply open the cover, pull the exhausted battery and swap it with the other battery. No going all the way back to the shed to get gas.

I also use the 40v blower and edger. Using the same battery for edgers and blowers allows for easier storage, less mess with two cycle fuel and overall, a cleaner lawn care system.

Mowing the lawn with this mower is fun and for someone older, much easier than a much heavier mower.
