Performance Notes:
First heard in the 1926 musical, “Oh, Kay!,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” was composed by the George and Ira Gershwin. In the context of the show, the melody was to be sung in a more up-tempo, jazzy, and playful manner. Later, it became much more well-known in the slower and more wistful sort of performance in which most people would recognize today. This arrangement follows this model.
In performance, the melody should be performed thoughtfully and haltingly. With the possible exception of the con animato phrase at measure 45, nearly every phrase should be performed with some rubato. Additionally, the soloist need not adhere strictly to the written rhythm. It should be played ad libitum. In the piano, the triplets (and one sextuplet) which appear in bars 19, 37-40, 53, and 55-56 may be played slightly late and with some added prominence. All may be played in the a la “cocktail piano.”
Lyrics:
There's a saying old, says that love is blind.
Still we're often told, “seek and ye shall find.”
So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind.
Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet;
He's the big affair I cannot forget,
Only man I ever think of with regret.
I'd like to add his initial to my monogram.
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?
There's a somebody I'm longin' to see:
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me.
I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood;
I know I could always be good.
To one who'll watch over me
Although he may not be
The man some girls think of as handsome, To my heart he carries the key.
Won't you tell him please to put on some speed, Follow my lead? Oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me.
