Why do cats smell each other?

When two people meet, they evaluate each other's body language, facial expressions, and tone of speech, and to quickly assess their relationship, they may shake hands or hug each other, or they may completely ignore each other.

Cats do not speak or shake hands like humans. When two cats meet, they usually sniff the head or back area first. This physical greeting releases pheromones from the glands in the face, so the cat's sense of smell acts as a form of chemical communication tool between the cats with each other. Just by smelling another cat, the cat can determine if they are male or female, happy or aggressive, healthy or bad.
