03/05/16: Battle Creek police said an officer attempted to stop the man's car for speeding near Hubbard Street and Goodale Avenue.

The car stopped but as the officer approached, Major Jim Grafton said the driver put his hand out and fired a shot from a pistol.

The officer was not hit and fired several shots at the fleeing car. Then he and several other officers pursued the car until the driver stopped on Keith Drive and ran on foot north through a yard and into the rear of a home in the 100 block of Coolidge Avenue just west of North Avenue and the next street north from Keith Drive.

Grafton said the residents of the home apparently are family members of the man. People inside the house soon left but the man was still inside, police said.

Police said the man left his phone in his car and officers were never able to talk to the man. They used loud speakers ordering him to come out of the house.

Officers recovered a revolver near Goodale Avenue and Kendall Street after an anonymous caller found the weapon in the snow. Officers believe the man threw the gun from the car as he fled from the traffic stop.

olice surrounded the home, blocking a portion of both Coolidge Avenue and Keith Drive. Spectators gathered across North Avenue in a store parking lot as more than two dozen officers gathered at the scene.

After obtaining a search warrant and unable to talk with the man, officers from the Emergency Response Team along with a department dog entered the home just before 7 p.m. and found the man hiding in the basement, officers said.

"He was bitten by the canine in the arm," Grafton said, and the man was treated at the scene by paramedics from Lifecare Ambulance, before being transported to the Calhoun County Jail.
