A listener calls in to describe the union-busting tactics he's seen deployed against Starbucks employees. He tells the story of a manager approaching him and encouraging to take more time off, the thought being that employees would drain their vacation days and not have anything left over when it came for organized labor efforts.

Hi, my name is Tom. And I just wanted to talk about the perspective of non-unionized Starbucks stores. Because I just quit my job at Starbucks last week. Okay yeah, you emailed in didn't you. Yes, I did. Okay great. All right yeah so tell us where the store was? So it was in Nassau County. South Nassau. I won't name the particular store. okay but yeah just yeah. And basically, once the union-busting stuff started to happen the whole mood of the store changed it became very it was a turn-off to work there. And they would do things like we'd have to watch this hour-long video of Howard Schultz babbling about the spirit of Starbucks and all this stupid crap. Oh, I gotta ask you this question. In that video did he tell the story about the Warsaw Ghetto. No, it was not that one. that one was for management. Only oh sharing the blanket. Okay yeah okay I got you yes so or maybe that was it Auschwitz? or was it the Warsaw Ghetto? I can't remember exactly but apropos that's just for management, yeah I mean you could almost like I can't wait to watch that part in the Ken Burns documentary. where it's like where Ken Burns compares to Holocaust to just like working at a Starbucks but go ahead. so yeah my boss as a Jewish woman though was not too happy about that. but that's beside the point.
