"The monument in Brzeg is the 24th out of 60 that have been identified as to be demolished. Work to dismantle the monument in the city will last several days," Rafal Leshkevich, spokesman for the Institute of National Remembrance for the Elimination of Communist Symbols, said.

This was part of a wider campaign by the Polish Institute of National Remembrance, which is responsible for memorial work, to eliminate communist symbols.

In recent years, hundreds of monuments to the Red Army soldiers who died for the liberation of the country have been destroyed in Poland. In the summer of 2017, Polish President Andrzej Duda signed amendments to the law banning propaganda of communism or another totalitarian system in the names of buildings, objects and premises for public use
